icon-fusion

icon, Pronunciation: /ˈʌɪkɒn/ /ˈʌɪk(ə)n/
A person or thing regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration.
A symbol or graphic representation on a screen of a program, option, or window.

As archetypal objects, the teapot and kettle sit at the intersection between two distinct paths in contemporary design. The first is the rise of the iconic product form as the essence of a designer’s identity, as in Philippe Starck’s Hot Bertaa; the second is the representation of physical things in the digital universe, best exemplified by Martin Newell’s Utah Teapot. In both cases, the object at hand is simultaneously a signifier and an approximation of a functional object, defined more by its iconography than by its use value, proliferating freely through virtual forums, from Photoshop and Pinterest to Rhino and Thingiverse.

Icon-fusion is a digital tool that translates objects into abstract point clouds, allowing the user to morph between two distinct forms and pause the process to create an infinite number of intermediary hybrids. The app is a speculative investigation of the evolving virtual generation of 20th century design icons.
Concrete Moduli for 99 Dom-Ino

Monditalia – Fundamentals 14. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura
La Biennale di Venezia
7 June – 23 November 2014

99 Dom-Ino is a series of films by Space Caviar that takes the centennial of Le Corbusier’s Maison Dom-Ino as the trigger for a survey of Italian domesticity and its relationship with the landscape over the last 100 years. I was commissioned to create a series of concrete sculptural seating elements to accompany the films in Venice. The Maison Dom-Ino has been described both as Le Corbusier’s biggest failure and as his greatest success. Inhabitants of the structures were invited to adopt the architectural language of modernity but often did not . The Moduli seek to reflect the trend towards a playful melee between pure modernist forms and the classically decorative.
"Many design projects, such as the Mine Kafon, or the Sea Chair made of recycled plastic fished out of the seas, are not real solutions at all but simply illustrations of a problem. That to me is the work of illustrators. Which is why I doubt whether we designers can live up to expectations."
Caryatids

As a Londoner, visiting postcard-perfect villages in Limburg, one experiences the quirky nuances of wealthy provincial aspiration. A pair of seated stone lions sit outside a detached pebble-dash house. Across the street, someone has framed their front door with two Doric columns and an elaborate pediment. Further still along the street, three front gardens make a bold attempt to embody the Orangerie of Versaille.

Deliberately anthropomorphic, these new Caryatid forms explore the potential for readily available second hand glassware and plastic replica Greco-Roman flower pots to become noble architectural props. Using flexible, elastic moulding materials, these vessels were transformed.
Swallow

Swallow explores the historic re-use of existing traditional domestic archetypes in Dutch conceptual design. The project employs flexible moulds taken of standard household vessels. These moulds are then stretched over other objects to make new forms, creating the sense that one object is consuming the next. The project explores questions about conceptual designers sampling of functional archetypes - often resulting in less useful, more expensive products.

The new porcelain forms were then worked whilst leather hard, and new functions like stacking were introduced. The function of stacking - being one of the most vital functions of domestic tableware - becomes ridiculous.
Inside Out 1

"A thing is a hole in a thing that is not."
Carl Andre

This statement was the starting point for an investigation looking at furniture and sculpture as cuts or voids in space. Working with flexible rubber moulds, it became possible to play with the negative interior spaces of the tableware, transforming their inner voids into positive volumes. These inverted ceramic forms clearly reference domestic archetypes, but no longer have an obvious function. They have become concepts. Inside Out questions their new status as objects. Are they Conceptual Design or Art? What is the difference and how can context influence this?
